Change Default Photo Viewer (Photos Open too Slowly)
The Windows default photo viewer can be very slow to open photos stored in folders with a very large number of documents. For example, the folder on the server where all LAMA documents are stored. You can change which program opens JPG and JPEG files in order to avoid this delay. Internet Explorer, for instance, will open photos very quickly.
- Left-click on your Windows Start button, and then select Default Programs from the list of options along the right side of the menu.
- In the Default Programs window, click on the link that says "Associate a file type or protocol with a program."
- The Set Associations window will open, with a long list of file types to choose from.
Nearly all photos stored in LAMA have the file extension .jpg or .jpeg.
Scroll down to the "J" section and click on the line for .jpeg, and then click the Change program button.
- If you see the Internet Explorer icon as an option under "Recommended Programs," great! Click on that, and all your .jpeg files will open in Internet Explorer in the future. Repeat this process to add .jpg files too.
If you don't see Internet Explorer icon in "Recommended Programs," try clicking the small "down" arrow to the right of "Other Programs" to see if it's one of the options there.
- If Internet Explorer isn't in your Recommend or Other Programs, click the Browse button near the bottom right of the window. That will open your computer's file explorer to the folder with your Program Files. Find the Internet Explorer folder in the list, and double-click to open it.
- Find the file named iexplore or iexplore.exe and double-click it - that will add it to your "Other Programs" options in the previous window. Click the icon and the OK button, and Internet Explorer will open all of your .jpeg files in the future. Remember to repeat the process for .jpg.
